Environmental and sustainability policy requires an organisation-wide approach.
Albert Keijzer continuously works on reducing CO2 emissions in various areas, such as housing, business operations, and execution of logistic services. This is a process that was started throughout the organisation several years ago and is still one of the company's core tasks on a daily basis. Albert Keijzer has been ‘Lean and Green’ certified since 2010.
Environment and sustainability in transport lines.
To protect the environment in terms of emissions and noise pollution, the tank and silo combinations use electric loading and unloading systems. In addition, since a few years ago, several tractors run on a combination of diesel and the clean CNG (Compressed Natural Gas), and since the autumn of 2020, there are also 3 tractors that run entirely on CNG. CNG, also known as green gas, is a fuel with a much lower emission of particulates, NOx and CO2. CNG is many times cleaner than petrol or diesel. But we expect it will not stop there. Partly under pressure from future CO2 taxes and tiered toll charges (including in the Netherlands), the trucks of the future will be powered by electric motors and hydrogen engines. Albert Keijzer closely follows developments in this field by maintaining regular contact with truck suppliers. Based on current insights, the management expects that in bulk transport (both liquid and solid), Albert Keijzer's main business, they will skip the step to electrically powered trucks, and that in the future they will invest in trucks that use hydrogen as a fuel. We also expect platooning to make its appearance in the transport world in due course. Platooning means vehicles that drive cooperatively at close distances from each other (less than 1 second) based on automated (autonomous) driving technology. In English, these trains are also called road trains. Many of our trucks are already equipped with safety systems that support drivers in driving safely. We now have several trucks equipped with the 1st generation platooning systems.
Another but no less important detail is that all trailers are equipped with an automatic tyre pressure system. This system ensures that the tyres remain at the correct – preset – tyre pressure. Keeping the tyres at the right pressure saves fuel and therefore reduces CO2 emissions. In addition, the system prevents unnecessary wear and tear (and burst tyres). An additional advantage is that our combinations are not unnecessarily stopped at the side of the road when they have a flat tire. Punctured tires are kept inflated so that the driver can safely reach a repair shop.
Energy and environmentally conscious operations.
Roofs of buildings at locations Albert Keijzerstraat/Oostzijde, Achtersluispolder and Hazeldonk were used to install solar panels. This allows Albert Keijzer to almost completely meet its own energy needs. The energy consumption is also reduced by providing the workshop, tank cleaning and surrounding areas with LED lighting.
Both the new building and the interior of the new office on the Albert Keijzerstraat will strive to minimise CO2 emissions.
